Lieven Martens's Taped Sounds gets all historical with a limited re-issued run of 'Spel' from Belgian prog outfit Kandahar. Originally entitled 'Kandahar: Spel - Samuel Beckett', these two ultra chill compositions we're originally composed to soundtrack Samuel Beckett's play of the same name and released via Hara Productions back in 1983 - around my fourth birthday. Kandahar's sound is in keeping with the soothing, ambient and yet strangely ambitious (and commercially successful) compositional work of the time, with artists like Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, Yanni, Jean Michel Jarre and Mike Oldfield coming to mind.

Recorded in a fairly crude manner by comparison to the big hitters of the time 'Spel' has a warm, gritty tone for such a laid-back affair and gives these two extended compositions a very distinct character. Soothing and emotionally effecting, 'Spel' is a testament to the potential of the synth as a truly humanistic instrument. The melodies themselves are on a par with the awesome 'China' by Vangelis and brings to mind vague memories of the film Ladyhawke... for some reason.
