24-year-old artist/producer Kwes has made a few waves already prior to signing up to the legendary Warp imprint. This EP marks his first release for them, opening with the warm melodic drift of 'Klee' before the soothing r'n'b-tinged future-pop of centrepiece 'Bashful', with smooth synths and silky nonchalant vocals and understated beats. 'Honey' then offers some womblike grime-tinged soul smoothness. Closer 'Lgoyh' then heads even further into this synthetic soul territory, with reverby vocals offset by some nice clicky microbeats. There's a good balance here between experimental, slightly disorienting production techniques, recalling the likes of Clams Casino or Balam Acab, and pure pop songwriting, with a very human personality stamped all over the synthetic tones, leaving a slice of laid back summer pop that's very hard to resist. Mega smooth ethereal future soul, basically. Very interested to hear what he comes up with next.
