8/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 17th February 2015
"Fear Fun" is ex-Fleet Foxes drummer, J. Tillman's first album under his new pseudonym Father John Misty and his first solo outing since his departure from Fleet Foxes. To my ears it marks a bit of change in sound. The J. Tillman stuff I'd heard was rather dull so I didn't investigate much further than one album. This is sunny in places and quite beautiful, even the album cover is wonderfully colourful. It does come across like a '70s singer/songwriter album at times, which is fine by me, "Nancy From Now On" brings such things to mind. "Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings" is one of the best tracks, a kind of Phil Spector/Jesus and Mary Chain reverb drenched drum beat and loosely strummed guitar provide a spacious sound for his vocals to ark over. There's a change of pace on the upbeat country number "I'm Writing A Novel" - it's these two tracks that stand out and make this better than his previous solo work. Even the slow stuff is way more beautiful and emotionally affecting, I'm thing specifically of "O I Long To Feel Your Arms Around Me". It's very good, and I'm pleased I've found something great by an artist I used to think was a bit dull.
