Yo Yo Yo! RAWK!!!! Torche are an exceptional rock band that manage to balance the equation of melody and brutality perfectly leaving me uplifted every-time I hear the band. Torche dudes Steve Brooks and Juan Montoya's previous combo Floor are the only band that spring to mind that do the melodic metal thing better - though space rock types like Hum also come to mind. Their split with Part Chimp last year was my introduction to the band with their side being three fully beefed up covers of Guided By Voices songs. It was triple mint. 'Harmonicraft' sees the group step things up a little to cater for the potential cross-over audience of indie-rock kids who've begun to show interest. I'm hoping they can ride the coat-tails of way shittier bands like Fucked Up and The Men and achieve ATP status. They deserve it too as they write chunky slabs of melodic rock of the likes you rarely here nowadays. Sure, in parts it's a little cheeseball (it's rock afterall) and occasionally they hit on Soundgarden territory (no bad thing) or risk sounding like some dodge euro-rock but for the most part this is jammin'. Don't Volcom make shoes? Why are they a label now? What's going on?
