Dearie me. I let the gaffer choose my pile this week and wish I'd never bothered. This 'Valentine' single is kinda Florence & the Machine meets late period All About Eve anthemic tosh that will be filling the airwaves all over the shop(s) this spring. By “shops” I mean Top Man and Kookai and “airwaves” I mean our entire polluted biosphere. 'China Doll' is even worse, a hideous ballad that sounds like a million backwoods pub jukeboxes shitting in my ears. I just had to rip it the turntable off for fear of putting my head through this computer monitor in fury and despair. Kudos to Ford & Lopatin for doing their utmost to salvage 'Valentine', I didn't think this 12” was worth any more of my head time. They dress it up as a wistful dreamy experimental skank that can't quite drown out the worst vocal excesses but still sounds tons better than half the stuff on their artist album, which I couldn't stand. That could get me a slap off at least one person here but who cares.
