An odd signing for Kranky in that they are a) a trio from England and b) tend towards a particularly flavoursome chamber pop rather than the ambience that dominates the label. Built around the piano and cello of main person Lucinda Chua (also a Stars of the Lid touring member....ah I see), theirs is a gentle pastoral sound, kind of like a PJ Harvey on downers. Augmented by guitar, bass and  lightly brushed drums the songs twisty and turn hither and thither, at times reminding me of Josephine Wiggs two post/pre Breeders projects The Josephine Wiggs Experience and Honey Tongue but also hints of Shannon Wright and Sharon Van Etten . Highlights are opener 'The Bells' and the title track where the rolling piano somehow recalls Charlie Brown soundtrack genius Vince Guaraldi if he had fronted pastoral 90's post rock twiddlers Very Secretary. Now there's a thought. When the vocals stop there's lots of gorgeous instrumentation especially on the Rachels like 'Blessing' , its all strangely muted, a softly muffled twilight existence but in places quite delightful.
