I'm a particularly bad painter (me Nan was the artist in our family) so I'm enamoured of any label that calls itself Bad Paintings. I think The Babies are the band Cassie R from Vivian Girls spends more of her time on now. They've certainly got bags of charm and seem to be pretty darn popular, releasing lots of curious, obscure split sevens and the like. This one is all theirs however! About as shambolic as VGs, this latest enigmatic U.S. 7” from the Babies finds them on one side doing the ace M/F vocal led 'My Name' which definitely has an early Beat Happening rudimentary stomp to it and a charming rattly refrain. Pure, casual frayed-around-the-edges indie rock replete with bum notes and those cute carefree vocals, Cassie's intro is as cool 'n' sassy as it gets. 'The War' is even better, still with that raw lo-fi BH vibe but much more of a rousing anthemic old skool Jeffrey Lewis feel in there too. Proper sing-a-long bare-bones American indie pop that warrants a five for being utterly real, slightly scrappy and super fun.
