Nice looking record, this. They've all got a total handmade feel to them with the screenprinted covers on thick white paper, and the record's an intimate and personal little thing too, with lots of distant echoey guitars and vocals and some drone and chunter soundscape passages in between. When some minimal drums are brought in, on the dusky 'Frontier Mother', there's a great psychedelic ethereal freak-folk exploration with high vocal drones and wah guitar...this number's got a bit of a Sylvester Anfang II feel to it actually. On the flip there's another percussion-driven piece in the middle called 'New Seeds' but this has a more pastoral fluid nylon-string approach like Woods when they get jammy. These two numbers are certainly my personal favourites out of the bunch here. By and large, though, this LP is more on a ethereal sort of dreamfolk tip with an experimental touch. The kind of quiet, unintrusive record that you should really spend time with on your own late at night rather than in the middle of an office with the printer going off one side and tape guns behind you. It's sometimes relaxing and sometimes a bit more awkward and spooked and always a little bit distant and ancient-sounding, but sadly I feel these beatless pieces can drag a little. Bit of a mixed bag but there's plenty of variety and moments of real excellence here.
