9/10 Li'l Biz 03 April 2012

Black Dice are the fucking BONG. Always have been, always will be. They've been kicking up shit for so long that it's got to the point that even the converted are ripping 'em a new asshole (Vice / Loud And Quiet - I'm looking at you dick-nuts) and writing them off for whatever fucking hipster reason they've concocted in there iphone-minds. Well, I can tell you confidently that 'Mr. Impossible' is a maddening triumph and a testament to the power of a severely bonged out mind. By comparison to 2010's 'Repo' it's also fairly tame and listener friendly. Sure, they delve into some pretty dense, industrial terrain at times but on 'Mr. Impossible' those sample heavy assaults are refined and almost danceable for the most part. What is probably most disorientating is the trio's choice of samples which are no doubt odd in there construction and tone but are all the more unique and inviting for it. I mean, who the hell makes records like this anyway? Surely on the basis of risk taking alone it's worth applauding the lads for their efforts to subvert the language of dance music to indecipherable levels. I mean, this shit is pretty damn funky if you let yourself be seduced by the corrupted and broken snippets of audio that make up it's personality. You might think they're playing us for a bunch of chumps but you'd be wrong lad. Just try and tap into their sense of adventure (and wicked sense of humour that comes with it) and you'll figure out why these boys are still standing after more bong hits and record label wranglings than most will in endure in multiple lifetimes. Fuck Vice.
