Now this one's interesting. New York trio GHXST (pronounced 'Ghost') are introducing themselves by way of this sexy-looking grey vinyl LP, and it's a well-formed sound they're peddling. Influences including goth, industrial, synthpop, indie, shoegaze and noise rock all mix together in a curious stew of heady atmospheres, sharp beats, fried guitars and submerged melodies. Bands they're reminding me of include Pitchshifter, The Kills, Ectoplasm Girls, Godflesh...the precision industrial rock guitar and drums in the heavier songs really do recall that late '90s White Zombie/NIN-influenced robotically polished sound, but when they take things down a notch and let things get driftier it's a much more haunted and modern sound altogether and it's in these slow burners like 'White Nights' and the Factory Floor-esque 'Bad Blood' that this band really come into their own, patiently building up a churning momentum that must get people dancing like crazy in the right live environment. There's moments in the noisier sections where it really does get discordant and gnarly and throws off a little of the soulless precision slickness that are totally brilliant, too, especially the buzzsaw intensity of 'Deth Valley'. Oh, and in 'Evening Redness' they do The Kills better than The Kills do. More a promising record than a perfect one, but when these guys hit their stride and settle into their dark, foreboding grooves they've got something very interesting going on.
