Not too bad, this. Sleepy Sun are back with some slinky stoned indie/Americana jams for us all. The building blocks here are largely typical '70s rock and folk stylings but they're woven together masterfully with the occasional droney, ethereal washes of sound, sometimes in the background, other times very much the focal point. The songwriting itself is reminding me of Neil Young in grunge mode, though. Unabashedly heartfelt but also kind of badass. Is it bad that the vocal delivery is reminding me a little of Cast? You decide. The production on this record is quite polished and I feel like sometimes that takes the life out of the tones a little. The songwriting's all there and the arrangements are excellent but the sound can feel a bit sterile in places. That's pretty subjective, though, and just because I like my records a bit grittier doesn't mean they're doing it wrong (i suppose you could just as easily say they're doing it right and I prefer it when people do it wrong). I've listened to it all the way through a couple of times and it's not annoying me or boring me but now it's finished I can't remember a single tune off it. It's polished and well delivered but I'm struggling to I guess the verdict is workmanlike but not dazzling.
