8/10 Penrith Steve 1st November 2014

"Vintage Violence" is John Cale's debut solo album following his departure from the Velvet Underground. John Cale has suggested that he is finding his feet and that the cover, which shows a picture of Cale with his face obscured by a mask, suggests that you can't yet see his personality in the songs. This may be the case but the songs are still very good. John Cale knows how to write a melody. "Gideon's Bible", "Adelaide", "Charlemagne" and "Amsterdam" are all great. The songs are quite simple but anything John Cale does is unlikely sound like anything else so there's a great deal of originality within that simplicity.
