It's my lucky week. Phil is letting me review the new CD on Time Released Sound instead of doing it himself like he usually does. What a treat. Here on this one, with the usual classy limited handmade packaging, there's five songs of gorgeous experimental neoclassicism mixed with found sounds and electronic treatment. Sometimes it's a little awkward and experimental but more often than not it's the kind of fragile, brittle, soundtracky emotionalism that the likes of Harold Budd or Olafur Arnalds excel in. I'm particularly taken by 'Some Kind Of Womb', where the tinklings are accompanied by soft, warm drones to incredibly relaxing effect, but this whole CD is absorbing and detailed and will reward repeated listens with its carefully constructed atmospheres. Just in case you got too relaxed, though, the next number's got a load of backwards female vocals and creepy space samples to shift us into a different atmospheric environment altogether. If you enjoyed the recent Scissors & Sellotape LP this one will probably appeal to you. It's all very tasteful, but playful with it. Little bit neoclassical, little bit experimental minimal. Classy stuff indeed.
