Last time I heard these guys I kinda marked them down as fairly anonymous twee girl-fronted indie pop along the lines of Allo Darlin' but putting this disc on my player blasts those preconceptions out of the window a little bit as the first track opens with some impressively gnarly bass before barrelling into a pretty rocky little power-pop number. In fact these guys have a lot of fun '90s sounds going on...that late '90s post-grunge power-pop aesthetic but with some pretty big Smiths (singer Katherine Whitaker's phrasing and delivery often remind me of Morrissey, weirdly enough) and Cocteau Twins influences too. Actually, the more laid back of the songs on here do have a bit of an Allo Darlin' feel to them but then there's some total Superchunky rock moments too. Just good old fashioned slick, peppy power-pop with nice trebly high-gain guitar. Really summery. Shades of Rainer Maria and Lemuria in there as well but less rough around the edges than those bands. Have I said 'power-pop' enough times yet?
