Mixed Emotions by Tanlines

Oh Tanlines. With this future nature pop you really spoil us. After a string of reliable dance singles for various taste-making labels this NY duo finally hit us with a debut full length. I have no memory of the duo's previous output (sometimes I just block stuff out...you can't care about it all afterall) so I come to this with fresh ears...and what I'm hearing is a style of organic meet synthetic, mechanical meets melancholic sound that I've been hearing a lot of lately in indie-pop circles. I think these guys might be at the forefront of this movement so I shouldn't dis but to me, it sounds like they've been pipped at the post by a bunch of other artists. So, 'Mixed Emotions' sounds like pure post-Animal Collective pop that places melancholic lyrical themes at the centre of a modernist indie dance sound that encompasses elements of Dream-Pop, Shoegaze, 80's power-ballads as well as British pop bands like New Order and the like. It's power-pop for a new generation of heartbroken kids. It works well enough but it drifts a little for my liking and the overly dramatic production approach is a little off-putting. Not a patch on Future islands. I'm sure the rest of the world disagrees so expect to see these kids rockin' their arena-pop all over this summer. They'll probably find some time to remix Vampire Weekend somewhere along the lines.
