Charming bit of fairly minimal psychedelia here from American duo Niao, which consists of George Glikerdas doing vocals, samples (I'm kinda struggling to figure out where these are) and keys and Gordon Spencer-Blaetz bringing the rhythms. Churning, primal rhythms they are too, with a slightly African feel. They actually remind me a little of Moondog, curiously enough. The overall feel is quite light and pleasant, with a psych-folky physicality mixing it up with the kind of mad restrained post-dubby pacing like you'd get from Sun Araw or Sylvester Anfang II. There's no guitar anywhere to be seen but the song constructions are less dense and more primitive than the likes of new agey synth psych contemporaries Prince Rama, giving a mystical journey that's much more comparable to the worldly guitar-based antics of Orfanado's recent 'Iter' disc (which has been getting regular spins at home from me of late), but with the guitars replaced by Araw-esque synth tones and babbling chanty vocals that have a spiritual Native American/Krishna type feel to them. It makes for a hypnotic mix, and the drumming really impresses throughout with its polyrhythmic restraint. On 'Computer Keyboard Oil' he's joined by another drummer to create a bubbling sense of momentum, but even here there's tranquil, hypnotic vibes at the fore. Those of you enjoying the current glut of post-dub, post-psych-folk chuntering will have find plenty to appreciate on this LP I'm sure.
