Pretty little thing, this one, in one of those fancy folding card sleeves that the Japanese are so much better at than everyone else. The disc inside contains five songs from MayMay, the brainchild of songwriter Laurel Simmons. They're minimal, twinkly affairs with lush but spacious arrangements and fragile, basic melodies that remind me a little of Tenniscoats or Heather Broderick. H-Brods is actually playing on this too, in fact, with Nicholas Marshall and Amanda Lawrence rounding off the combo, but this is for the most part so skeletal it's hard to tell what the other three are doing aside from the odd tasteful harmony and minimal string accompaniment. It's very familiar territory that Simmons is treading here but she does it with real grace and style. Hushed, mournful songwriting with beautiful, understated melodies to bring a little comfort and peace in a harsh and surprising world.
