Onderstroom have reissued a couple of minimal '80s synth LPs this week, and this brightly-coloured little number by Tranquil Eyes is one of them. There's a cool little booklet with lyrics and photos of the duo looking like slick disaffected yuppies, and the record itself contains a succession of bright, skeletal synth-pop songs. One of them sounds almost exactly like early Human League, with whichever of them is singing doing his very best Phil Oakie impression, and there's a song later in the album that sounds heavily indebted to Japan, and closer 'The Fitness School' is their take on the early hip-hop sounds that were doing the rounds at the time, with a slow old-school Run DMC-esque lyrical flow about how partying too hard and exercising too little will do you no good alongside funky guitars and a beat that recalls 'Kung Fu Fighting' offset by soft synth melodies. Very of its time but still a thoroughly enjoyable listen. Close your eyes and it's like the '90s never happened.
