I enjoyed what I heard of the Mickey Newbury box set, an under-appreciated American songwriter of that particular vintage which also brings to mind the likes of Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson and Jimmy Webb. Here we have two versions of the same song, Newbury's early 1970's original and a re-work by uber-fan Bill Callaghan. It's probably sacrilege to say this but I prefer the song in Callaghan's understated hands. Newbury's version is an emotive ballad recalling some of Gene Clark's 'No Other' album in its ambitious scope but is just a little too overblown with its '70s polished production. In Callaghan's hands the words hit harder into the soul and a light hand on the console reveals the song's true colours. A fascinating document and a must for fans of both Callahan and Newbury. Also serves as a nice little teaser for what can be found in the lost archives of Newbury's recently re-discovered back catalogue.
