Nite Jewel (a.k.a Ramona Gonzales) is looking a lot moodier on the sleeve of her new album than she did on 'Good Evening'. I wonder what might have happened? I hope she's OK. Maybe she's just tapping into that moody sultry popstar look the kids seem to be into these days...who knows. Right - I don't know Nite Jewel's stuff so I'm reviewing this one as an ignoramus...again. Sorry. What I can tell you is that Nite Jewel is decent. The opening two tracks have got me instantly interested with there grounding in the classic electro-pop of the mid-80's revamped and given that slightly gothy pop feel you might associate with Niki And The Dove or that cool tune on the Drive soundtrack with that ridiculously sentimental chorus ('Nightcall' I think it's called). Love the synths on this album and the beats ain't all that bad either. We can put that down to Gonzales's long-time collaborator - ace producer Cole MGN (he recorded parts of that Ariel Pink record everyone loves). As for Nite Jewels vocal contributions? She's sounding awesome I reckon. One part classic Soul and R&B, one part Sade and, off course, one part early Madonna. Certainly an appealing combination I'm sure you'll agree. So yeah, a cool, dynamic (is slightly stilted and occasionally downbeat) collection that I'll no doubt be giving a few more spins over the next few days.
