- Evil / Jezebel by Tom Jones

Jesus. What is this? Where the hell am I working? Why is Tom Jones on the stereo? This is possibly the hippest thang he's been involved in since that amazing Cerys Matthews / Talking Heads hatchet job last century. Here Uncle Tom brings forth his “Valleys magic” to grace an outrageous and audacious Howlin' Wolf cover replete with stax brass, amped-up Blues Hammer guitar, honky-tonk piano and his unmistakable, over-exuberant leathery lounge lizard's vocal display. I think I just split my troooosers. Laughing that is. Not scissor kicking around the office, oh no. The best thing about this bizarre atrocity is the sheer bloody minded energy and enthusiasm of the thing. Kim was so freaked out by his sleazy eyes following her round the office she's attached a little pair of orange paper specs to his unnaturally tanned fizzgog. Mike also accurately notes his resemblance to Jafar from Aladdin. I much prefer the sweeping gothic blues of 'Jezebel', the Frankie Lane classic overleaf. Here old Tom's rich brogue of a voice really shines and the music is reasonably grand and luxurious to match. Two stars for the 'A', 4 for the flip makes a not too appalling 6 if you really must have these stupid star ratings.
