Liechtenstein are a girl group from Gothenburg who painstakingly recreate the female side of the C86 jangle pop scene with extremely jaunty tunes featuring lashings of jangly guitar and hummable zippy tunes. The main reference points would be Shop Assistants, Tallulah Gosh, Marine Girls, Waitresses but also with hints of the tougher edge of earlier travellers such as The Raincoats and The Slits. It has a post-punk energy and angularity that prevents it becoming anywhere near as cloying as the likes of Heavenly and despite the obvious influences are closer to the Vivian Girls and affiliates. Reading through the previous reviews, all the same names keep coming up which is understandable as they have a signature sound and are very easy to categorize but we shouldn't dismiss them as mere copyists, there's a hat full of joyous tunes contained in here and when they hit a memorable melody as on 'Passion for Water' the album is all the better for it. They also present light and shade and tunes such as 'Fast Forward' have a more world weary quality, they also have a good knack with a harmony. Honest to goodness old fashioned indie pop like your mum used to make!
