Curmugeounly as an old sock in real life, yet the perfect downtrodden comic on record, Stephin Merrit and his merry band return with a song so life-affirmingly tuneful and hilariously droll you'll want to pop a balloon. It's a high camp tale of Merritt falling in love with a lad who dressed up as a lady for a 'gag' and the ensuing melancholy he feels when he realises he'll never see that 'girl' again. As you may imagine, lyrically its perfect - Merrit could write his own sitcom if he wanted to but what really appeals is that this is the best tune they've come up with in years. Immediately catchy, with a sky scraping chorus you'll be humming it forever. The only downside is that if like me, you've listened to it 15 million times the immediate euphoria kind of wears off and you are left with the gloom you feel when that pretty blonde in the corner scrapes off her make up to reveal a 'tache and Adam's apple combo. Still, fun while it lasts.
