I'm getting a little jaded by the 12” remix project. There seems to be tonnes of them about at the moment and they don't really add anything to the albums they purportedly are promoting. Here, Battles are reworked in by various luminaries. Firstly The Alchemist does a dark take on 'Futura' with DJ Shadow beats, cut up voice and darkwave synths that recall almost exactly those on Wall of Voodoo's 'Red Light' to pluck a ridiculously obscure name out of the hat. Shabazz Palaces do the old hippity hop with stuttering beats and heavily affected rapping. Bit of steel drum in there at the end. Kode 9's mix starts with the same steel drum and is a very chirpy little ditty that sounds like the sort of painfully upbeat jingle the BBC would use to advertise an evening of minority sport in a third world country. Relentlessly upbeat, the sort of thing us Brits are ashamed to be seen leaping around to. Give us rain and pasties any day.
