8/10 Li'l Biz Staff review, 24 February 2012

You'll know more than I do about Xiu Xiu. Somehow their existence has passed me by. The involvement of Deerhoof drummer Greg Saunier in the group was the reason I picked this up. I heard he'd being helping to produce the band and on 'Always', dips his hand in on some of the playing too. On first listen it's not the kind of thing I'd associate with Greg but it's pretty damn crazy. Good too. Again, forgive my naivety on the subject but this is mental. It's like hyper-realistic future pop full of pomp and high drama yet packed with inventive ideas. Jamie Stewart's voice has that intense goth-tinged electro pop delivery down to a fine art and, by the looks of the press release, he's fond of broaching some pretty intense subject matter. Impossible to judge this against previous efforts but as a stand alone record I'm enjoying it. Loads of crazy ideas flying about, loads of sweet glacial synths and bold yet playful approach to songcraft. Hard not to like it though I can imagine this sort of electro melodrama is an opinion-divider.
