9/10 Moon Rabbit Customer review, 21st June 2014

Already in 2010, when I stumbled across Nedry's debut album, 'Condors', thanks to one of my Myspace searches for new music (remember Myspace? Was very useful back then), I knew I found something special. A trio by way of London, Osaka and Guildford, Nedry drifts somewhere in the weird fringes of the musical spectrum. The two modern-day electronic scientists, Chris Amblin and Matt Parker, and eccentric singer, Ayu Okakita, provide an ecstatic and kaleidoscopic musical fusion that takes hold of the listener quickly and utterly.

While 'Condors' displayed potential and scattered electricity, 'In A Dim Light' (Nedry's sophomore full-length effort) displays more mature, crystallized and refined sonic landscapes. The edginess is there, but the shades are darker and more assertive than before, and overall the tracks are more dynamic and detailed. Each track constantly twists and morphs, and that nurtures interest and tension. Elements of trip hop, post-rock, dubstep and electronica merge captivatingly and effortlessly. Radio-friendly? Certainly not. Don't expect to hear this on your local station, it's far too quirky and gloomy for that. Nedry is one of those rare acts that can make a bassline wobble without making it sound cheesy and recycled.

One of this album's charms is that it's eccentrically danceable yet deep enough in order to dive into on your listening couch nocturnally. Also, of course, as with any good album, repeat dives reveal more details and subtleties. It's a beautifully hectic and darkly seductive album. If it slipped under your radar in 2012 when Monotreme released it, then get yourselves a copy now, and while you're at it pick up a copy of 'Condors' as well. There's a good chance that 'In A Dim Light' is a harbinger of even better and riskier things to come from Nedry. Let's hope we'll hear more from this group. Modern hybrid music at its finest.
