Wow. Gemma Ray takes on two classic Spark's tracks with the help of...of all people, the brothers Sparks. Can't say I've heard of anything like this before and I'm surprised it sounds so good. Gemma Ray goes at these songs with confidence, fitting her noir style breathy vocals around the generally quirky arrangements leaving the Sparks lads free to rejig the whole affair with insanely grandiose orchestral arrangements. It's basically Sparks fronted by Kate Bush. Amazing stuff. No need to bang on about it, you it's a winner. Oh, and the artwork is by prized illustrator Rick Froberg (Obits / Hot Snakes). Happy days.

10/10 Daniel Customer review, 21st June 2015

I was originally looking for Sparks' collaborative album with Franz Ferdinand when I stumbled upon this single as I scrolled down the list of related searches. Until then I had never heard of Gemma Ray but, my goodness, what a discovery! Her voice and harmonies are marvellous, and I think she may have done the enviable for any musician - she managed to make not one but two cover versions which are better than the originals. Of course, part of the credit has to go to the Mael brothers themselves, who contributed the orchestral arrangements and such like, but the sheer fact that Ms Ray has managed to make me enjoy 'Eaten by the Monster of Love', which in its original form was a strutting disco-flavoured concoction with a ridiculous vocal arrangement (even by Sparks' standards) which has made me feel nauseous every time I've listened to it, is nothing short of the mark of a musical genius.

Basically, even if you've never listened to anything by either of these artists, I implore you, give it a chance. Go and listen to both songs, or just buy the single. It is one of the most giddily brilliant, utterly beguiling, beautifully strange and, ultimately, best pop singles I have heard in years. Please, if you're still reading this, just buy the bloody thing now!
