8/10 Li'l Biz Staff review, 24 February 2012

Mysterious new entity Alt-J hit us with a second 7” single and this time it's triangle shaped! Gotta dig those novelty shapes. The reason I've picked this one out is because these lads are from Leeds (or thereabouts) so it's only fair we give 'em a fair listen. 'Matilda' is an odd little tune. The vocals in particular are hard to pin down sitting somewhere between that weird cLOUDDEAD vocalist and the whiny fella from Wild Beasts. He's almost the male equivalent of Joanna Newsom. Certainly an acquired taste. Musically it's a light acoustic guitar and beat affair that can only be described as ultra minimal. Flip it and 'Fitzpleasure' is a beefier number with growling saw synths and a big drum groove driving the track before ghostly guitars take the lead. It's on a way more dynamic tip than 'Matilda' and definitely brings to mind Wild Beasts (again) due to the general kookiness of the arrangement. Hard to imagine this stuff doing really well for that very reason but you never know. A must have for the slick left-field pop crowd.

I love this record, it was playing on the radio the other day and I remembered it all the way home! And it got great reviews on Steve Lamacq's Round Table the next evening. A bit rock a bit folk but with an atmosphere all of it's own.
