So this was always gonna be of interest to someone. Mike Watt rarely makes appearances on any new records that pass through our neck of the woods so it's a special treat to come across this oddity. Kinda hard to explain what's going on here but I'll try. Oli Heffernan, a Middlesbrough resident has been cutting loops and making field recordings for years. He also has something to do with quirky indie-pop mainstay Das Wunderlust with whom I've shared the stage a number of times - which has got me wondering weather I know this dude. Anyway, after Mr. Watt (you know Make Watt - best living bass player on earth - one third of America's most important punk rock outfit The Minutemen) had requested to play tracks made by Oli on his radio show. He returned with a cheeky 'fancy contributing a little something to one of my tracks?' to which Mr. Watt graciously replied 'Yes, Off course...it'd be a pleasure'. He's not the only one either. Apparently Sick Room are putting out four of these collaborative 7” over the next few months so keep your eyes peeled. Here we get semi-pastoral, jazz infused cuts with Watt adding his own smoky take on the beat poet style over the top. His voice is perfectly suited to the style as it's deep, warm and comforting to the ear The music itself brings to mind the likes of Hood, Four Tet and the early wave of folktronica. Definitely a little pastoral...I already said that didn't I? Yer getting me though, right?
