- The Seasons (from the BBC Radio Schools Series 'Drama Workshop') by David Cain (Radiophonic Workshop)
8/10 Clinton Staff review, 17 February 2012
The Radiophonic Workshop is the gift that keeps on giving for fans of the retro 1970's nostalgia and if there's is lots more gold in them there hills then Trunk Records are usually the ones to mine it. This is part of a BBC Schools Radio Series called 'Drama Workshop' which was broadcast in the early 1970's. The album is a mixture of weird sing song electronic melodies and narration courtesy of Derek Bowskill. The music is a mixture of the (then) modern and the ancient. The Radiophonic Workshop in their inimitable style play pagan style melodies which to be honest will start to drive you crackers if you sit down and listen to the album as a whole. Like many things on Trunk its a peculiar curio and a way of documenting a particular time rather than something you'd want to listen to over and over again yet you still marvel at the inventiveness that made this kind of music. I think if I'd heard this as a child I'd have been even more disturbed than I already was as the repetitive melodies start to drive you insane after awhile.
