9/10 Phil Staff review, 26 January 2012
I never know what to expect from this guy cos he changes styles quite a lot. You never know what each album is gonna be like so he's one of those artists that needs special attention as I think he makes something for everyone. Even if you're not a fan of the bulk of his stuff I think there will be one or two records in his repertoire which will make you think 'Yeah man, that's pretty sweet'. I think this is one of those records. The album is a four-part suite (ie. four tracks) and it opens with a light and breezy number featuring Paul Duncan from Warm Ghost on vocals (he sounds a lot like the dude from TV On The Radio on this one). It's minimal and twinkly (my word of the day) and when the echoey vocals come in you take a step back and listen to what is simply a great song. I've just had to put it on again cos it's ace. Onto 'Knots' which features Joe Talia's percussion (they had a split LP out recently) and this track is very reminiscent of that mainly because Talia's percussion is so distinctive. 'Passage' is a droney, piano-based piece with Jessika Kenney's voice draped over some crackles, guitars and more. It's lovely stuff! There's another track as well but I'll leave that one for you to check out! It's a delightfully varied and interesting listen which has taken me a little by surprise!
