We've got two records in this week from the brand new French label Tamed, and this is one of them. The other one is the storming and gnarly new offering from psych legends-in-waiting Gnod so I'm going into this one with high hopes. Chicaloyoh is the solo project of one Alice Dourlen, pressed here for the first time on vinyl, who has put together a murky soup of ghostly drones and incantations on this here 33rpm 7”. I guess the obvious reference point here would have to be Pocahaunted, or maybe a murky, submerged Weyes Blood, it's drawn out, dark, late-night freak folk type stuff, with drifting, shifting vocal melodies submerged in electro-acoustic murk that shifts and develops in its own time. Towards the end of the second side, chiming guitars are joined by tribalistic drums for a brief peak but for the most part this fairly long 7” is a meditative, downbeat, hypnotic affair. Really absorbing and enigmatic stuff. The cover's really cool and mysterious, too...are they sleepwalkers? Are they zombies? Spooky.
