- If Beauty Is A Crime by Mi & L'Au

If beauty is a crime then sadly for me I'm looking at a very long prison sentence. It's just the way it is, I can't help my looks. Mi and L'au look horrendous on the cover photos for this album but maybe that's the point. They look terrible, really terrible. You may remember them from such record labels as Young God where they've been dispensed with as Michael Gira concentrates on the million different versions of the new Swans album where for £500 he will sing a song praising the purchaser. Let's hope not too many rapists and murderers stump up the cash or things could get very awkward. Anyway this is really quirky male and female pop. They come from Finland and they have a sound that is part cute twinkle and part something very dark and Lynchian. They sing together in a very eerie way and it's all very filmic. Kind of like if The Magnetic Fields played the songs of Tom Waits and hired a disturbed married couple to sing them. The title track sounds like a woozy Blondie at half speed, at other times they sound like Devics (remember them?) at other times they sound like they've been listening to a lot of French composers.
