Hauschka is back, this time with a lovely little three-song 10” on Serein. On the first side we've got 'So Close', a succession of repetitive piano-led loops that begin glacial and gradually get more upbeat and slightly skittery as they go along. I'm not sure if he's playing all this live or sampling himself but it's a hypnotic and effective passage of music that ranges from pumping almost beat-based playing to poignant and melancholy Frahmisms. The first song on the flip, 'So Far', is the only song on the record to be played on an unprepared piano, rarely heard in captivity. To do this, Bertelmann put his piano by the door, rolled a cigarette and left the room for a few moments, before suddenly leaping back to his stool and starting to play. The element of surprise is crucial and, like forced rhubarb, few experiences come close to that of hearing an unprepared piano. Unsurprisingly, this track is the most conventional on the EP, and achingly beautiful to boot. Finally we've got a piece for prepared piano and violin called 'Paige and June' which is lush and soundtracky. None of the tracks are short and none of them are shit either. What more do you want?
