6/10 Clinton Staff review, 06 January 2012
A collaboration between Portland duo Au and clever sax honker Colin Stetson. Stetson amazed me earlier this year with his album of sax vignettes and here he really brings something to the party (a big fat sax in fact). The A side is your typically post Arcade Fire/Mumford and Sons slosh-athon with a decidedly African flavour to the playing and big choral vocals with everyone singing together. Ach its all been done before though and even Stetson's saxophone solo is cliched. Certainly its full of energy and maybe if I was at a party and I'd had a couple of glasses of Tizer I may tap my foot. The B side however is captivatingly lovely. Completely different to the A side to the point that it sounds nothing like the same band Stetson's beautiful playing transforms the electronic blurs and ticksinto something really special. A slow burner of ambient bliss recalling Eno, Glass, Aphex Twin etc. A funny old single as originally I played the B side thinking it was the A side and was mightily impressed but for all the A sides bluster, its just not really my thing though expertly done of course.
