Florian Hecker is back with four whole sides of his mind-bending computer music for us to struggle to comprehend - just the listening material I need half an hour before the end of a shift, I'm sure you'll agree. This album opens with a repeated scale, high pitched and percussive, with galloping repetitive melodic clicks over the top, then we've got a piece that starts more disjointed but eventually reaches some kind of queasily melodic repetitive feel...and that's just the first side! To be honest the technical and mathematical elements of this kind of computer music are somewhat lost on me and the tones are too harsh for this to be a particularly relaxing listen, but it certainly holds your attention as it stumblingly pings its way through its various cycles and passages like a room full of Newton's cradles. If you're already into Hecker's work then to my ears this is more of the same; if you're new to his cerebral computer music style it might be a good idea to check out some clips before you invest, because this is essentially mathematical music in its purest form.
