6/10 Clinton Staff review, 13 January 2012
With a name like Casiokids you know what to expect. It's like Twilight Sad calling themselves Noisy, Shoegazey Scottish Lads. This has the feel of a group who have heard that Postal Service album and thought 'we can do that' but forgetting to write any songs (thanks Mike for that analogy). The first track here is something of a red herring, sounding like the soundtrack to a bunch of role playing long hairs playing dungeons and dragons. It soon, however goes head first into the honey pot known as kinda Magnetic Fields-y synth pop but without any discernible pop nous. On 'Dr Tarzan Monsoon' there are some kind of eastern melodies which are nice but there is not enough oomph in the vocals to really give the Russian Futurists a run for their money. The strongest aspect seems to be when they get into an instrumental groove which brings out a nice line in synth pop charm but it's hard to see what on earth convinced A-ha to take these as support on their farewell tour unless of course it was to make them sound even better in comparison.
