- VEPA by Pete Swanson / Scott Goodwin
9/10 Brian Staff review, 05 January 2012
I've only just truly starting to appreciate and understand the dense walls of psychedelic sludge & sparkling multi-hued noise that Pete Swanson cooks up under his baffling array of thinly disguised aliases. His is a hybrid sound that really opens up new dimensions in experimental music and here he collaborates with his bud Scott Goodwin on a tape/synth project. Once again you're not gonna get anything like the obvious from Swanny and co.. Vepa is a conduit for some really deep and strange hypnotic mind-frying. Dense, seemingly ever-building, grainy, flickering walls of treacly noise are carried along with a sloooow techno pulse buried beneath the melee. Heavy, lulling and enlightening stuff on this first piece indeed! The subsequent tune builds up from drones, hyper-clicks, industrial flickers, pulse-like clusters and granular shuffles. It sounds both austere and spiritually cleansing. Flip the fucker over and these sci-fi windscreepers zig-zag into your head cavern before electronic grumbles, echo-beats and stormy trails of feedback morph in and out of a scorched sonic wasteland, the like of which I really don't recognise. This is dystopian music indeed but it also has wry humour and total intrigue in spades. Will look out for more by this dastardly duo.
