- Unspoken Words by Hior Chronik
8/10 Mike Staff review, 05 January 2012
Hior Chronik? I'm not sure if that is this guy's actual name, some kind of a pseudonym, a band/project name? Most mysterious. Either way I can tell you what he sounds like. It's minimal, crackly, warm modern composition that falls between ambient and neoclassical territory. It's desperately sad in places, but also stoical, hopeful and measured. There's soft, plaintive piano running through a large proportion of this album, accompanied by gentle hisses and crackles and imperfections and microbeats that seem to add to it an extra layer of longing without betraying the clarity of the music they're underscoring, and there's a constant stream of guest performers providing clarinet, vocals and various other services throughout. It's a melodic record, but he's not afraid to leave a little breathing space around the tunes to subtly manipulate the atmosphere and create a more holistic and complete listening experience. Fans of Nils Frahm and his ilk would be wise to give this a listen.
