8/10 Li'l Biz Staff review, 30 December 2011

It's been a while since Ben Nash dropped a solo LP so everyone here in the office was super psych'd when the new batch of Blackest Rainbow LP's arrived this week. After a lengthy stint playing and touring with his band mates in Chora Nash returns to his solo work with renewed vigor and a bunch of new tools at his disposal. Currently dissatisfied with his standard method of multi-tracking various physical instruments Nash has chosen to indulge himself in strictly digitised methods of music making, hence 'Oh Lordy Me!...' has been created with the help of the Yamaha TNR-I app and Logic..of all things. The result is an abstract and playful LP full of surprise sounds and mysterious sequences. It feels very free-form for music created within the digital domain but I guess that goes to show how far the modest laptop has come on in music making terms over the past decade. 'Oh Lordy Me!...' is chock full of beautiful percussive tones, bells, chimes and soft ambient drones that will lull even the most fierce, untamed noise aficionados. The stand out moment has got to be the abrasive Reich-esque assault of 'Oh Lordy Me! (Phase 1). I'd go as far as to saying it's a 'Reich rip-off' etc. Now...time to check out that Yamaha app.
