Having never heard Dead Reptile Shrine I'm taken aback by their super mutated style. 'The Sun Of Circles And Wood' is a strange beast even in Dark Ambient and Black metal terms. Their primitive approach to riffs and the ultra loose style of rhythmical interplay is like nothing I've heard in some time. It brings to mind the Dwarr outsider metal vibe but with a much more sophisticated palette. Here Ambient synths share space with obscurest chorus-heavy bass chords, brutal drones, satanic chants and strange occultist mutterings. If this is the work of a full band I'd be very surprised. Most likely it's a duo or solo project dabbling in an attempt to break the mould and come up with something new in the field. I'm not a big fan of the style so it's difficult for me to judge if they are succeeding or not ,yet it's still a fascinating listen with some genuine stand-out moments like 'Weapon, Crucifixion And drowning' and 'Throne Of Stone'. Gotta love those song titles.
