This record opens up sounding really cosmic with a hypnotic bass pulse, but once the drums and vocals come in I can tell that I'm in for something a bit more unhinged and psychedelic than the repeato-kraut fest I was envisaging. Actually now they're into the swing of things this sounds like the new age hippieisms of Prince Rama mixed with the free-spirited performance abandon of bands like Sunburned Hand or Raccoo-oo-oon. There's elements of Sun Araw in the dubby texture-building of the quieter moments but more often than not they're pushing out Suicide-gone-psych weirdness that's very hard to compare to anyone specific. Business Lady just told me they did a split with A.P.A.T.T. last year which kind of makes sense, not because they sound the same but because they're both energetic leftfield weirdos who don't really sound like anyone else. The tribal new romantic pulse of Tunnels is now bringing to mind Dead Can Dance...honestly, the influences here are all over the bloody shop. Flip it and we've got more of these intense minimal psychedelic excursions. There's a song called 'I Go Basic' which has some really ace simple repetitive synth melodies that take things somewhere a bit more uplifting and less ominous. Yet another decent record from Upset! The Rhythm.
