8/10 Mike Staff review, 15 December 2011

After reviewing the awkward new FIRE! record it's nice to have something a with a few more tunes to write about, and this single here is packed full of the bloody things. Half-handed Cloud offer up five whole songs on their side, while even I Was A King manage to stretch theirs to two. Actually, it's pretty difficult to hear where the Half-handed Cloud tracks start and finish because they all seem to run into one another but they're very charming in a twee indie-folk kind of way. Very tightly arranged stuff with great vocal harmonies, this side is actually reminding me of Of Montreal's early stuff back when they were a bit more acoustic. On their side, I Was A King offer up a Paul Noble mix of their song 'Happy', followed by a quick run through Half-handed Cloud's 'Baby Moon'. 'Happy' has a real early '90s slacker pop sound to it that I always appreciate in a band...kind of like My Bloody Valentine's earlier and more twee output mixed in with a bit of Stone Roses. Their cover is a pretty saccharine and forgettable affair, sadly, and I think I prefer the barely-hinged weirdness of the Half-handed Cloud side, but both bands here put in a decent showing at worst and there's moments of real inspiration here. Indie pop pickers take note.
