NNF offshoot 100% Silk have been wowing the office with their fresh takes on classic House themes and their various stylistic tangents, be it Disco cut-up's, Acid House, Ambient House, Techno or whatever. With an imminent UK tour package heading our way it's an opportune time for the label to introduce a budget CD sampler. Compiled by 100% Silk's Sir Stephen, 'Silkmix Vol. 1' features recent plus future 100% Silk cuts giving the listener an idea of what to expect from the tour and the label in general. 100% Silk's strength comes from the juxtaposition between d.i.y bedroom culture production and the promise of bourgeoisie good time clubbing, be it in Chicago, New York, Ibiza, London, L.A, Detroit, Miami or wherever. 100% Silk (an the artist's on the label) appear to be nostalgic for a more naive time in clubland's history and are doing their best to rekindle that spirit. Musically the nostalgia is clear. Check Sir Stephen's own 'Move That Body' for a blatant rip of Inner City's 'Good Life' and observe Innergaze's Ron Hardy style disco cut 'Shadow Disco' for proof. Elsewhere it's less clear cut but if you wanna hear a return to staccato piano lines in dance music, or perhaps orchestra hits or beautifully cut-up female vocals then this is the place to look. Personally I love this stuff. The foundations of House and Club music were imprinted on my brain (and any other kid growing up in Thatcher's Britain) from an early age thanks to the massive success of house in the UK charts from the mid-80's onward. Hard the justify considering the epic leaps that have taken place in dance culture over the past 30 years but for me this sounds as raw and fresh as anything I'm expected to enjoy/intellectualise over in 2011. Recommend you check out Maria Minerva, Octo Octa, Magic Touch, Malvoeaux, Ital and the rest a.s.a.p...and don't miss the tour.
