- Diamond Catalog ‘Magnified Palette’ Remixes by Various
8/10 Clinton Staff review, 18 November 2011
Tapes. You have to love them. Firstly I couldn't get it in the machine now its in there its getting all mangled up....actually it isn't its the music that is mangled. This is a soft, strong and very, very long compilation of remixes prepared as a companion album to Diamond Catalog's 'Magnified Palette' album from earlier this year. Now, if you don't know who Diamond Catalog are then you should be ashamed - they feature ex members of Indignant Senility and Expressway Yo-Yo Dieting for gods sake! Anyway here is Mike's description of the original album (rehashed here like an ageing Brit pop band on one last pay day).“There's very little melody to speak of here, it's really mostly clatterings and groanings and rattlings”. This could similarly describe this compilation - its very industrial in nature but extremely powerful gritty electronic music. Opener Opium and Cherry Cola sounds a bit like Third Eye Foundation but that is its commercial high point as Unknown Bum do something unspeakable with their sound sources. Elsewhere commercial paydirt is hit with contributions from murky ethera-tronica pin up chick Liz Harris, Future Blondes, Jacket Juice and the magnificently named My Whole Hand Was Wet. not for the faint hearted but 85 minutes of disturbed dance music really blows away those cobwebs.
