8/10 Dave Staff review, 16 November 2011
Unrelentingly bleak, goth-tinged folk from Maine (the birth place of Stephen King, this is the one thing I know for sure about Maine!) resident Clare Hubbard, who makes music under the name Caethua. With a handful of releases under her belt (or beneath her corset!) shared over a variety of other labels, “The Summer is Over” is perhaps Caethua's most realised work. Eight sonically perfect songs, filled to the goblets brim with heart melting vocal melodies, and dream-provoking lyrical passages, Tastefully accompanied by Hubbard's guitar, saxophone, piano and the odd well placed soundscape. On this record she is ably accompanied by multi instrumentalist and WWE wrestling sensation Andy Neubauer (who wrestles under the name of Umaga or Bastion Booger only on Sunday) Andy Neubauer has cut his teeth with Impractical Cockpit and Flowbee Au Naturale and lends his rather sumptuous bass clarinet and cello playing to this, haunting long player. It sounds pretty darn good this record, and has been produced and recorded by Alex Yusimov and mastered to within an inch of it's life by Tim Stollenwerk. These guys are proper on the ball and it must be great to have these meisters in ch-ch-charge. Its a record that has light coupled with darkness and sounds like a great alt-folk record. Lovely stuff......
