- Intrigue & Stuff Vol.3 by Leyland Kirby
So we are into the second half of this four part series, five tracks wide and 35 minutes long, it begins with 'The Start Of Wars And The End Of Eras' which is the sound of machines singing while malfunctioning. The electronics paint huge cyberdelic vistas, futuristic cities decaying in real time to the audio while droid lights fleet through the smog reflecting off of polished chrome. All the while the track is held together by its skeleton which is a grand and vibrant symphony. 'Fleeting Modern' has the feel of a mutilated and warped Acid House record slowed down to an eighth of its intended speed, the squelches and crackles somehow manage to transport the listener back in time yet into the future. 'Lie Low, Pick Your Moment' is gently propelled by a palette of dry drum machine sounds with a thudding distorted kick while several synth melodies intertwine, mutating and wrapping around one-another. Once you get your head around the layers it's a gorgeous track with sadness bleeding from the recesses. 'The Watcher And The Watched' comes across like a darker more distorted The Other People Place at times, Drexciyan even, yet still sparkles with originality. The drums are rugged and again the synths create fluorescent trails like driving through the set of Blade Runner on Acid. 'We Might Just Lose This One' closes proceedings in fine style. The image I'm given is one of flying through the cosmos looking back at planet earth, destroyed and in carnage. A feeling of sadness but one of hope that another planet to inhabit is just around the corner. What a series this has been so far, there's so much going on in these tracks but they never become over complex and are deeply routed in human emotion. I'm looking forward to the final instalment as I'm sure all followers will be once they've piped this one into their cerebral cortexes.
