Zachary Cole Smith also records with another band called Beach Fossils but on this one he's with Dive, who the press release cryptically describe as the most hardworking live band in Brooklyn. I'd imagine figuring out the most hardworking live band in Brooklyn is a harder statistic to accurately calculate than really seems efficient or financially viable, so I suspect even this solitary “fact” has been pulled out of thin air. No matter, however. This single on Captured Tracks is actually very nice. It's indie/dreampop with a bit of shoegazey reverb thrown in, but not enough to mask the details or melodies. The ghostly pop vibes are actually reminding me a bit of the cracking Teenage Panzerkorps 7” Captured Tracks put out not too long ago (more spectral pop and less abrasive kraut than TPk's albums). The songwriting's got a bit of a Manchestery feel to it but the production is definitely very much based in that contemporary Spector-influenced garage vein favoured by so many excellent American bands right now. Imagine Deerhunter or Crystal Stilts covering New Order or something. It doesn't sound much like that, but that's as close as I can think of right now and I've got more reviews to write before home time.
