Closing Time by Tom Waits

Closing Time was where it all began for Tom Waits, arguably the greatest cult artist in the history of popular music. Released in 1973, Waits didn’t yet possess his legendarily gruff vocal delivery, his approach more honeyed and traditional on immortal tracks like ‘Ol’ 55’ and the aching ‘Martha’.

9/10 Penrith Steve 22nd October 2014

This is Tom Waits debut album. It is much more, shall we say, normal than his later crazy but brilliant albums. Straight forward songs, but what brilliant songs they are. You can picture him sitting at a piano in an empty bar singing his heart out to these. "Ol '55" was covered by the Eagles, make of that what you will, but a beautiful song none the less. "Rosie" and "Martha" are among the best songs on here but the absolute cream of the crop is his song of the hopeless bar room Romeo "I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You". Brilliant stuff.
