9/10 Phil Staff review, 17 November 2011

This week there's not one but two CD's out by Maps & Diagrams. Well they weren't both supposed to be released in the same week but due to one particular shop not understanding the concept of release dates they're both available right here right now. Anyway here's a brief reviewette for one of 'em... namely 'The Town Beneath The Sea'. Over the years Tim Martin's work has developed from doing more melodic electronica to ambient soundscapey gear. This falls into the latter with it sounding very much like a 12K release. It's got a lush electro acoustic feel and it's one of the warmest sounding droney records I've heard in a while. There's plenty going on so it's not a 'boring' drone record by any stretch of the means. It's layered and textured and if anything it's like my homemade Shepherds Pie which gets better with every mouthful as you discover all the wonderful things I've put in it. Clicky noises busy up the background whilst the your ears are covered in warm velvety throbs and pulses. Thoroughly delightful and evocative music!
